AWS Storage Gateway

AWS storage gateway provides on-premises application with access to virtually unlimited cloud storage.

  • AWS storage gateway is a hybrid cloud storage service that gives you on-premises access to virtually unlimited cloud storage.
  • AWS storage gateway can be used to simplify storage management & to reduce costs for key hybrid cloud storage use cases.
  • Which include moving backup to the cloud using on premises file shares backed by cloud storage & providing low latency access to data in AWS for on-premises application.

Storage Gateway Types

There are three types of storage gateways:

  • File Gateway
  • Tape Gateway
  • Volume Gateway

File Gateway: File gateway presents a file interface that enables you to store files as objects in S3 using the industry-standard NFS & SMB file protocols and access those file via NFS & SMB from your data center amazon EC2 or access those file as objects directly in amazon S3.

Tape Gateway: Tape gateway presents a virtual tape library (VTL) consisting of virtual type drives & a virtual media changer to your backup application using storage industry standard ISCSI protocol.

Volume Gateway: Volume gateway presents your application block storage volume  using the ISCSI protocol. Data written to those volumes can be asynchronously backed up as point in the snapshot of your volumes & stored in the cloud as Amazon EBS snapshots.

Key Points:

File Gateway -> Backup Application, Database Backup, & File Share.

Volume cache/Volume gateway -> Application server, migrate to your S3 server.

Tape Gateway -> Backup Application, eg: VM backup, third party backup, backup your data S3 storage.
